Jean Ping is a Gabonese diplomat and politician who served as the Chairperson of the African Union Commission from 2008 to 2012. He was born on November 24, 1942 in Omboué, Gabon and studied in France before returning to Gabon to pursue a career in politics.
Before becoming the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Jean Ping held various ministerial positions in the Gabonese government, including Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Minister of Mines, Energy, and Hydraulic Resources. He also served as the President of the United Nations General Assembly in 2004.
Jean Ping ran for President of Gabon in the 2016 elections, but ultimately lost to incumbent President Ali Bongo. The election was marred by accusations of fraud and irregularities, leading to a political crisis in the country.
Jean Ping continues to be involved in Gabonese politics and remains a prominent figure in African diplomacy.
